I see Jim uses phpwiki, but it is marked as unstable on gentoo (will
have to investigate that). Does anyone have any recommendations.

This wikiclone originally is developped for Japanese people,

Just had a frustrating day today playing with wikis. I can safely say that both phpwiki and wacko do *not* work under php5.

I reckkon the solution is to revert back to php4 rather than to find an alternate wiki.
