The magic words for that are fetchmail, cron, postfix, and possibly qpopper or 
something similar.
Also being a bit clever with scripts allows you to remove unwanted messages 
from the pop server before they are down-loaded. 

Don't forget that the bandwidth of the mail system with a set of cds in a 
package is quite a bit wider than a normal adsl line. There are a number of 
folks who have exploited that fact and created services out of it. In fact 
one of the better ones is pretty close to you.
