> Compaq Armada 1520

I know that an Armada 1700 runs fine under Linux, except perhaps for the
fan, which switches off under DOS and fried a pcmcia card. I can't
remember whether it kept running under Linux as I hardwired it.
It's not a terribly useful machine though, even with approx 300MB RAM
it's slow, the CPU is slow to start with (p2 233?), and the disks
don't have DMA (= very slow).

Sorry to say, but that box *is* a doorstop. Times when X could be run in
32MB are long past, though I admit not having tried it for a while. And
on top of that you then want to run some application software? Not
openoffice, that's for sure. I doubt that you'd be able to make use of
this box in a manner which remotely resembles efficient. The bare
minimum for anything desktop is a P2 I'd say, though a P1 might do you
in a crunch as long as it has an MMX (or AMD equivalent) in its name,
IMHO.
