Can't help but wonder why you are reluctant to reinstall xp yourself?

I don't have an install CD set Roger.

If the machine came from HarveyN, I'm surprised they gave you no O/S setup disks.
What brand PC is it? Is there an install files directory on the hard drive?

I ask because it may be that your PC's XP could be made to work properly without blitzing it (& Grub's boot sector etc.).

Most helpful would be identification of the suspect device, and how the error manifests (briefly).

(Off-)List members might be able to suggest less drastic remedies then.

Thanks Robert & Steve...offers very much appreciated but a no go for the afore-mentioned reason.

I will go the warranty route firstly ...just in case there is a hardware issue. I've found HN to be pretty good at fixing up things and putting it

Ralph

Rik.
