I have just acquired a 18mth. old ThinkPad.
The battery seems to be more or less ok at the moment. It last about two and a half hours.

I have heard many conflicting opinions about what one is supposed to do, and not do, to keep it in good health.

It depends upon the battery.
NiCads have a 'memory effect', where not discharging them completely tends to cause them to loose capacity (Ah).
All other styles of battery, to a varying degree do NOT like being
completely discharged, you shorten their life doing just that.
Given the battery is probably a NiMH or Lithium Ion, keep it charged.

Either way, never leave the battery discharged, always recharge it ASAP.
