Politely - I think its an X problem.

My Dell has an ATI video card, which simply does not put out a signal under
linux.  I've been meaning to look into the causes - but its been easier to
boot XP for those few times I needed a working VGA port.

Confirmed Win-good: it's a Compaq-Radeon/VGA-out/Linux issue, it seems. The
Function-Screen switching (LCD, external, or both) also does not 
work under Linux.

Using this is necessary to project DVD-play under Windows, because one 
must disable the LCD's frequency for the VGA-out/projector to settle its 
own requisite Hz.
