Only the administrater needs to worry or care what distro is being used. To a non-admin user, kde is kde, gnome is gnome, firefox is firefox, openoffice is openoffice - regardless of which distro is in use.
The difference between distros is in the installing and updating, which only the admin should do. My wife would probably not notice if I changed from Mdk to G2, as long as I took care to restore /home/julia and all her shortcuts.
