also check /dev/mixer

I had a similar problem - related to trying to get rid of OSS

I think the fix [on Gentoo] was related to something like
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
in /etc/modules.d/alsa

The problem was completely fixed when I went to udev for device
handling, so YMMV

PS Sorry about breaking the threading, my work email [Groupwise] does
not seem to handle threading at all.

not sure, but I would start with testing the ownership and permissions
of /dev/dsp (or whatever /dev/dsp points to :-)
