Thanks for the replies.

The problem seems to have "fixed itself" since a reboot. He is not sure why
but it is working fine now.

I think he has done rather well in the space of just a few days he has a
headless Gentoo server with Apache2, SSl ,Mysql ,PHP running and uses PuTTY
from work to administer it. He also has Bittornado running and TorrentFlux
to allow remote bittorrent admin.

A bit more practice with screen and Gentoo/Portage administration and he
will be ahead of me.

Apache only (usually) needs to resolve virtual domain names. If you add
these into /etc/hosts, either as a temporary solution, or permanently if
there aren't many of them, then this should speed things up.

That's /etc/hosts on the web server and your local client machine(s), if
they are different. As you can see, where the (s) gets larger, the more a
local dns server makes sense!
