Hi
Woodsey here. Thanks to Chris and Steve for the recent help.
Could anyone throw some light on the following
I am fairly convinced that my Xtinybin.tar is well mangled as Winzip won't look at it either so I had a look through all the directories on my linux box (Tiny Linux on 486) and found the directory /usr/X11R6/
Would this be a window manager directory?
One of them. X is stuffed all over the place... /usr/lib/X11, config under /etc/X11...
Within this directory are sub directories bin lib man
Within /usr/X11R6/bin are the files XConsole* asapm* xapm* does anyone know what these are and what the star signifies?
My fedora installation hasn't got any of them. The * signifies that they are executable. the ls command can be preconfigured using the alias command, which is built in to the default bash shell. It looks like your setup uses alias ls='ls -F', which identifies runnable programs with a trailing *, directories with a /, etc. You can use it to set up pretty colour coding amongst other things, if you want. And, of course there's the malicious alias ls='rm -f', which can cause problems ( don't try it at home kids... :)
You could always try typing in /usr/X11R6/bin/XConsole, and seeing what happens... <ctrl>-<alt>-<backspace> resets X, and the Redmond 3 fingered salute usually reboots if necessary!
man alias, and man ls will give you more info.
I am using an instruction manual but as always they lead to more questions.
If you're not wquite on the same wavelength as the author, then they can be heavy going!
