Just a little point. I had some trouble with my pen drive recently,
where it always mounted readonly, having detected the lock as on, no
matter how hard I jiggled and shoved the little slide switch to 'off'.
Turns out to be a dodgy switch, and is fine if I leave it in the middle.
Moral of the story - The answer is not always in the expected direction.
Have you tried other pen drives that are known to be good elsewhere?
It is easy to be chasing your tail when there are more than one
variable.
Have you tried the more mundane way?
Does
fdisk -l
show it?
How about if you stop the udev daemon? (I don't use it 'coe I've never
heard of it)
I use the following script - it assumes that there is only one USB
device plugged in.
mount -t vfat \
`fdisk -l \
| grep "Disk /dev/sd" \
| cut -d" " -f2 \
| sed s/:/1/` \
/usbdisk -o rw,gid=famten,umask=0007,uid=al
