The combination of installing the ATI driver package(s) & increasing the default monitor frequencies in XF86Config-4 has put Ubuntu correctly on the big screen now, via laptop video out.
And I didn't even need to restart X!
Last job: suss Totem's handling of DVD formats like .vob

see if one of your multiple distros has a package for them. (I must say,
without inviting a flamewar, that i am pleased to be "over" my days of
"distro-junkying".
