Thank you for the replies,
I played around with the Mandrake setup and got a gui startup screen this time. Selecting kde crashed kde but with a msg 'no write authority for .ICEauthority'. I started icewm, changed my permissions and restarted X and kde = success.

<Frustration Dept> A while ago I set up my Mandrake8.2 to automatically start Icewm.
I have now decided to revert to a runlevel 3 startup so I can start a selected wm with 'startx','startx icewm' or 'startx kde'. Now only icewm will start irrespective of the command given.
I presume there is a . file controlling this action but I can not locate it. .wmrc in my home dir contained 'icewm' but removing this file did not affect the loading.
I have tried completely uninstalling then reinstalling all kde packages without success.
Any ideas please
