Hi Both,
Can I strongly reccomend a spare PC to practice Linux on so you don't mess up your working system. I have done this several times and have learned this lesson the hard way. This way you can still use e-mail and web on the working system to get things sorted out.

A spare PC is the way to go! I have just made a major blunder on my Linux practice box and luckily I have this working system with which to access information to try and sort it out.

Another possibillity is to separate operating system and user data. Just make another partition with /home and maybe one with /etc. If you have any problem, just reinstall your distribution, configure the partition table and reinstall all packages you use. Under SuSE you can also export a list with all the packages installed. This way I used the same /home directory over about 10 installations in half a year :)
