Better to create a new partition (if you can find a utility to resize a
NTFS partition) then use that for data that is common to XP and Linux.  

Upside:  Can be written and read by both, if it is your home directory,
is safe from harm if you wish to wipe/upgrade an O/S.  Easy to configure
a backup method for personal (as opposed to system) files.  

Downside:  No security.  Poor filesystem that needs periodic defragging.
 Still stuck with dual boot (UGH!)


The REALLY easy way is to use an old PC as a Linux data server, then the
network takes care of all the read/write issues.  Much more flexible.
