no, that is what the : does
the % is to apply the command to the whole file instead of the current
line.

it is not really modularity since ed is built right into vi.
this is actually more of a demonstration of improving and merging
existing stuff instead of writing things from scratch.

well, i am using vi for 8 years or so now and i am still not happy with
it. i am just to lazy to learn and use multiple editors and switch and
keep mixing up things, so when at one time i was occaionally forced to
use vi because nothing else was available i decided to make the best out
of it and stick with it. occasionally i did have to switch back to emacs
which is the editor i had learned first, to do stuff that i had not
figured out in vi yet.
