Subject: A drink & a talk: night out anyone?

Hi folks,

After the usual deliberations in-committee, we are about ready to kick
off the 2005 social & training calender thus.

We have an excellent guest speaker available for next Monday night only,
24 January - check your diaries please.

Profile:

Ruediger Berlich studied physics at the university of
Bochum / Germany. As of 1998, he has worked for
German Linux distributor SuSE, and has held various
positions, including Technical Manager (Support) of
SuSE's US office and Managing Director of SuSE's
UK office. In 2001, Ruediger started a PhD thesis at
the University of Bochum, related to distributed computing
and particle physics. He has finished this thesis in
January 2004 and now works in Grid research at
Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe / Germany.

It is important to keep abreast of Ruediger's field, because some say the
"parallel/distributed processing model.. [is] the most important research
direction of modern computer science". Grid Computing Research Group

Ruediger will also speak after the half-time break, from his 13-year
involvement with Linux & work for SuSE (a perfect Q&A opportunity).

We have booked a room at the Cashmere Club on Colombo Street, from c7-10pm for
the event. This would cost us $40, is difficult for Internet (non-essential),
but has a bar onsite.

Can we please have indications of attendance now, and any suggestions for
alternative venues? (preferably cheap/free, online & near beer.) Our usual
venues are unavailable. A turnout of around 30 would be typical, of late.

Regards,

Rik Tindall
