Thanks for the replies. I uninstalled, then ran ./configure prefix=/usr and all now works.
I had a quick read through the documentation, loaded a photo and produced a pattern in little more than an hour I guess.
Very impressed with the app which is obviously for a niche market, easy to get suitable output which is quite comprehensive with all cottons coded for shade and length. The chart can be printed in color and coded if desired.
