I found an init string that works and I'm not gonna change anything incase I break something, so I can't be perfectly sure that it was this change that made things happen, or just the alignment of planets at this particular time that allows me to connect... (maybe the guys monitoring the satellite saw I was having trouble.)
For the record I now use AT&F1.

naturally I tried using default init strings to start with as I had been using them with paradise. Didn't seem to work though which is why I googled and followed those suggestions to try others.

seems like they do use PAP.
I had previously tried that minicom stuff too, following suggestions in the ppp-howto
