I have had to downgrade to xorg 6.7.0 to get the ati-drivers to
functions reliably, the ati-drivers that did work with 6.8.0 stopped
working for some reason and the downgrades fixed the problem so I will
stick with the downgraded versions till the ati-drivers are reliable
with 6.8.0.

I can't get X to work any more.
Which version exactly?
$ X -version
will produce the details.
I have an ATI card and am running the
latest drivers which require xorg 6.8.
Again which ATI card?
Everything is installed but when I try to run X it just crashes.
Why?
What does it say at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The command as root
tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log
will tell you.
If I
try and do an emerge -uD world it wants to re-emerge xorg 6.7 but that
won't work with the ATI drivers... do any Gentoo users have any
suggestions for me?
What happens if you say ( as root )
Xorg -configure
and perhaps
Xorg -probeonly
