and on that score you are 100% correct. Sometimes you strike it lucky when you find an individual in a shop who knows the ropes. The PC Broker bossman (Keith? Kevin?) often knows if stuff will work with Linux, but they generally sell second hand gear. Frankly _most_ core PC stuff works in linux, in terms of motherboards etc if you use newer kernels. kernel stuff is clearly on a constant catch up with new variations in motherboards and emereging stuff like SATA and the new e-PCI, new core chipsets blah blah. google groups is a good place to search linux AND $motherboard_model_number. Add-ons like usb devices where umpteen manufacturers take generic chipsets and add weird firmware and give it a new USB id to confuse the kernel are a perrenial pain.
