Serious question: suppose I intend to buy a new computer. Why should I get SATA drives? They cost more but perform the same, afterall it's the same disk just with a different interface. What exactly is the point?
From my perspective in the business server end of the market, it's because IDE drives are going to become rare and expensive over the next few years, compared to SATA. So if I intend to support a box being built today over a 5-year timescale (which I will do, because it's Linux) then I need to consider that point.
On the other hand, if it's a home box, in a few years time you'll be more than happy to score your bigger HDD from a second-hand broker, rather than from a "new" supplier.
