if you are concerned about the machine being attacked you need to firewall it.

you say you have a LAN. Go out and get a cheap late model 486 or early model 
pentium. install ipcop. don't let the nasty net get at your windows machines 
again.

if you are concerned about spyware, take a couple of steps:

1. teach the computer users to stop clicking on weird links
2. install firefox and ban IE
3. clean it with a spyware cleaner regularly

i find lavasoft's adaware good at dealing to spyware.

alternative to 1,2,3,  install linux. in reality is there really anything you 
_need_ windows for?
