Have a look in /etc/syslog.conf and look for a line with /dev/tty10.

Syslog might be writing (some of) it's logs there.

That was it. I even that nasty feature that pops up a xconsole whenever there is a system event. "fortune > /dev/tty2" with a little timer must be good April joke.
