I had to do that with my old Lappy (Now Deceased thanks to the cat). Back then I used RH6.1 which has boot images for floppy that then allow other CD-ROMS to be detected and continue the install process. It may still be able to be done with Debian, Fedora, Suse etc - those with the install CD's should be able to find out for you. I haven't had to us a floppy for install for about 2 to 3 years now.
