 Agreed.I recently bought a 4d trackball from dick smiths XH1866, a lot
better than swapping the mouse over to the left hand. With three buttons
and two wheels it was just a matter adding to xorg.conf

    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "IntelliMouse"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
    Option "Buttons" "7"
    Option "ZAxismapping" "6 7 4 5"

I know this is a shameless plug but from what I have seen trackballs are a
lot cheaper now compared to six years ago at $95.

Reversing the buttons for left handers requires xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"
in the .xinitrc file. see man xmodmap.
