You should checkout the hardware. Those symptoms are the same as 
intermittently faulty memory. There is a memory test program called 
memtest86. It is frequently placed on Linux install CDs, but I simply don't 
know if it's available as a boot option on the distributions you mention. 
Otherwise go to:

http://memtest86.com

and get the kit. It's very effective. If you let it run overnight it will 
without doubt discover faulty memory.
