It should probably work all right. I recent got a ASUS A2500K (Athlon64 3200 config) which is a similar system to that, and have managed to install Mandrake 10, Cooker and Ubuntu (x86 and AMD64 versions) on it with out any major problems.

Here are my system specs. Very similar.

In Linux the touchpad works fine, the ASUS ACPI key's work allowing screen dimming and the rest. Dropping to battery only causes the screen to dim as it should and so on.

It reports battery charge correctly.
I managed to get the ATI9700 on mine to work with out any problems.
Gigabit ethernet no problems at all.
The LED's can be set up with out to much difficulty as well.
Sound works perfectly.
I've managed to get CPU throttling working.
And also managed to get wireless to work via the NDIS driver.
The card reader loaded the correct modules but I've not managed to test that.

The only thing I've tried but not managed to get working is suspend. Which I think is due to using the ATI driver which is not compatible with Linux suspend at the moment.
I've not tried to get the software modem working though. So that I'm not sure about.

Thanks this is the sorta info I was looking for.
If you get the modem going please let me know as this would be very handy.
I would probably be running mandrake 10

Unfortunately due to the interest rate dse put on hp I will not be getting one of these for a couple of months.
