They appear to be making an automated ranking chart based on the number of www and usenet postings about each particular language. ( Google: going to challenge the abuse of your patent? ) Note from the graph how the "popularity" of java evaporates during the Nortern Hemisphere summer, and climbs up again and the beginning of the academic year. I believe this to be due to the fact that the students are no longer asking questions about it. Take from that what you wish. I'll just note that the absolutely ubiquitous bash ( Think O/S X ) is sitting at 33 bracketed by ruby ( the most popular scripting language in Japan ) on one side and PL/1 ( effectively extinct ) on the other.
