The German Antivir from www.freeav.de and other sites is free for
"non-commercial use"

It runs on linux as:

1. a command line tool - pass it a directory of files and it will find
the virii files therein

2. a gui similar to their windows version

3. a hook into the file system which will examine files as they are
accessed.

3. requires a kernel module called Dazuko. 2. is java based (IIRC). You
can update as often as you like provided you have a license. A license
is available for zilch for non-commercial use.

Although we should not be silly enough to suppose that linux is or will
remain a limited target for crackers, the main point of AV products for
linux is to protect other OS's from files that pass through the linux
box. Of course in its traditional mailserver and samba server roles
linux is a great central point for doing this, mail can be scanned
before it gets to the win machine, samba dirs can be regularly scanned
or the Dazuko module can scan on access.

I am not sure whether schools fit into the freeav definition of
non-commercial use. Once you have a command line scanner it is pretty
easy to build any AV solution into your email system via amavis.
