root (hd0,0) will fail because grub does not understand ntfs
rootnoverify (hd0,0)   will not care

By the way Lindsay, we didn't really need the commented bits, although I have 
to admit I didn't specify that :-)




So, by the looks of it, I have to uninstall Ubuntu 'some way' to get my
WinXP back. Does anyone no how to uninstall Ubuntu?

Can't you just edit /boot/grub/menu.1st so that it says rootnoverify?
