I suggest you have another attempt at installing Ubuntu.

> Output is:
> Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
> /dev/hda1 * 1 20805 10485680+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
> /dev/hda2 20806 42610 10485720 83 Linux
> /dev/hda3 41611 42645 521640 82 Linux swap
> /dev/fda4 42646 84255 20971440 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

When you get to the partitioning bit, tell it to use /dev/hda2 for
your root partition and /dev/hda3 for swap. Leave the other 2
partitions alone. Do not try to install linux on a FAT32 partition.

If it installs successfully, then it will probably see your Windows XP
partition on /dev/hda1 and add the entry to your Grub menu.

If you want to access the FAT32 partition from Ubuntu, you can modify
/etc/fstab after the installation is complete. How to do it has been
discussed on this list recently. Check the archives.
