OK thanks for letting us know that, are you sure you did amend it
properly AND save the changes? look at  the file again to make double
sure - its a long file with all that commented stuff in it so use less


less /boot/grub/menu.lst

hit page up and page down to move up and down the file and Q to exit the pager.

There is an entry on the ubuntu forum that indicates you might need to
change some of the bios settings for the hard disk.

then again, you could just forget windows - consider it an enforced
transition :-)

If you want a simple way back to windows there is no point uninstalling linux 
as that will NOT affect your bootloader, except perhaps to make
it crap out even more. (it will delete the stage 1.5 & 2 grub files and
the menu)

Use your windows XP CD to restore the MBR - I did say this before, but
that was the start of this very long thread :-)
