If you're interested in Debian for the desktop, but want something a
little more adventurous than Debian Stable, then I recommend Mepis
Linux. (www.mepis.org)
They produce a single LiveCD (like Knoppix) with a nice wizard to
install the OS to HDD.
Desktop environment = KDE ("apt-get install <other-desktop>" as required)
New version 3.3 released last week (which I am using on Compaq nx9040
notebook right now)
