I had similar problems, I could log in alright but once I was in I couldn't really do anything and I lost all my icons. The problem was caused by me filling up the hard drive. For some reason root was never affected, but the user who clogged the hard drive was (there was only ever one use logged in at a time).
I suggest checking that. If you're getting flakey perfomance out of gnome after that (like desktop icons missing and stuff) then just open the file browser from the menu tree. Sorry about all the meaningless wording and inspecific parts of this email.
