That's pretty much the conclusion I reached, to be honest.  I didn't really
see how it could work, but couldn't find any warnings or statements to
that effect.  I was sort of hoping to get away with it, as the new HD was
installed with the same $DISTRO, but clearly not.

That's fine.  Everything is backed up, but putting it back again is going
to involve some effort.  Thanks for enlightening my naivete.
