This is because the list is an object, whereas the 0 is a literal value.

Thanks for your help.  Did something about Python turn you away, did you
drop it for something better, or are you forced to use something else?

I really enjoyed learning and playing with Python, if I had a project that I wanted to do for the sake of doing - as opposed to the usual things I do which are for learning/playing - then I think I'd use Python.
If I want to embed a scriping language within an exisiting C app, I often use Lua.
My statically typed/compiled language of choice is currently D (www.digitalmars.com) - great language IMHO.
So in short, nothing turned me away - it's just been awhile since anything I was interested in fitted Python.
