What format do you convert to? You might be able to use something like "djpeg -scale 1/2 -bmp xxx.jpg | cjpeg -quality 60 -optimize -outfile xxx2.jpg". If you write a nice (not necessaryly shell-) script around this you have your converter. I did that in a small Java-program for reducing the quality of jpgs. It reduces their size by up to 90% without much loss in quality.

Given a pile of image files, is there a way with gimp to convert them
into a different image format, **WITHOUT** requiring any interactive
stuff? It needs to go into a shell for loop and work. No X11!

Yes I know about ImageMagick, and I wouldn't ask about gimp if IM had
fewer than a gazillion bugs and actually got the job done.
