gentoo sound & dial up

i have had one or two probs with the above, & think it had to do with 
copying roberts make file & not changing the cflags from pentium to 
athlon-xp when compiling in ppp. although i can dial up it requires 
logging in as root from a terminal to start kppp. a bit of reading on 
gentoo forums throws up a few topics relating to chmod but my few 
attempts haven't resulted in any success. as far as sound is concerned 
lspci shows the following for the sound card
