Ghostscript for windows is a free download. So is acroread.

True, but this is a problem in peoples' heads, not a software one.

At least in windows one can kill a print job which has already
started[1]. Expensive (in terms of ink and glossy paper) exercise under
Linux, unless you are root and have spent a long time learning the
commands you need to type.

[1] It works in lprng, but not cups. cups is overall better in terms of
features. Personally I'd find it much smarter to have a no-frills raw
queue and to do all the option selection stuff in a front-end program,
not in the print queue. Alas the world went another direction.
