The specs for gigabit state that you cannot certify a gigabit network on a wire shorter than 10m. Something to do with the physics of the thing. Even if you run it in circles make sure it is 10m long.
Also Cat5E cable, not just cat 5 cable. Sheilded is better. Rexel electronics sells the stuff. Don't buy at Dick Smith .. they are too expensive. I have a couple of hundred metres of cat5E cable unused in a box here. Would be happy to pass it on to you at $0.50 per metre.
