debian stable on sparc.

In /var/log/syslog I'm seeing multiple reports of

modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-4

and in /var/log/ksymoops/*.log I'm seeing multiple reports of

start /sbin/modprobe -s -k char-major-4 safemode=1

Furthermore, login terminals appear to respawning unacceptably fast
immediately after the message above. Extract from /var/log/syslog:
