KB/s via homenet external 56K dialup. So it's definitely some Ubuntu
pppd-rate-related setting that is throttled back, and not the Ubuntu.com
server load. Same platform under Debian gets a sufficient 4 KB/s (33K6
cardbus modem), out of the box using wvdial, whereas Ubuntu is stuck
around 1 KB/s. Such are the trials of notebook mobility..
