It sounds to me like Steve has an Axis camera - I have one myself,
they're a very nice self-contained unit, you provide power and an
ethernet cable, and they take care of the rest, running embedded linux
with a decent set of options - i.e. time series or motion detection,
with automated notification by email, or outgoing ftp, etc.

It beats having to have a full PC running 24/7 with a USB cable dragging
out of the window :-) Much much quieter. Sometimes expensive kit is
better than the compromises you have to go through with cheap stuff -
our time is worth money too.

Having said that, I can't believe that direct sunlight is good for these
devices, even in the medium term. Guessing that Steve isn't taking
pictures of clouds, you probably should simply mask out the entire
skyline by moving the camera or using a modified hood.
