To run a low level test on your cdrom drive run the following commands;

eject /dev/xxxx #opens cdrom drive tray
eject  -t  /dev/xxx     # closes cdrom tray

On my system xxx can be any one of the following;

 /dev/cdrom -> cdroms/cdrom0

 /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -> ../ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

 /dev/hdc -> ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

 /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

Hope that helps.
