Correct, I will connect to gateway 192.168.0.1

sussed order: #ifconfig eth1 add 192.168.0.2

worked, but not properly - can now ping 192.168.0.1 only (not ..0.2/its proper address).

gw: Host name lookup failure

route now has (only) two lines (below headings):

Destination  Gateway  ... Use Iface
192.168.0.0  *               ...  eth1
loopback      localhost ...  lo

Also noted I have bash-2.05b# prompt, which should be "gentoo" from /etc/hostname ; have I not logged on to my box's network hostname, or must I disable dhcpd?
