My apologies I discovered what the problem was. I was fudging around with usermod when I installed apache last week and didn't realise that you had to specify all the groups for that user everytime. So since then my normal user has just been a member of users, apache :/

Thanks for your help guys
Tony

Hi,

I'm able to log in on my Gentoo system as root using the correct password.
Previously I have been able to change to root using "su" and the same password
from my normal user. Now however, it doesn't accept the same password when I try
to use su. I'm not sure exactly what I have done to cause this.
Any ideas?

I'm at work now, but if it's useful I can zip home at lunch and get the exact
message it gives me.

Cheers
Tony
