No doubt php5 is better, if you have the luxury of rewriting the app for
it. The legacy is the problem.

Pretty much everyone running a mailing list on a new setup uses mailman,
and that's a lot. Sourceforge runs on mailman and is under constant
attack. It's a target alright.

The kiddies are not your worry. They don't post on bugtraq either,
whether php or python.

The legacy of problematic C/C++ apps seems to have been largely thrown
overboard now, though yes, these languages are diabolical for easy safe
programming practices.
