/var/cache/apt/archives/ to be exact.
that's what i did. except, in my case my notebook was low on diskspace,
so i actually nfs-mounted /var/cache/apt/archives/ from the other
workstation, and then ran apt-get dist-upgrade as usual.
the notebook then downloaded the missing packages that the other machine
had not needed and then happily did the install.
