Several independent problems. The Windows reinstall was caused by
something screwing windows. Not that most on this list think that'd be a
bad thing, but it shouldn't happen by a Linux install (and no proof that
indeed the Linux install caused the windows problem). Unknown cause, but
requiring complete reinstall.

The SuSE problem was caused by something setting the login/display
manager from kdm to xdm, and the window manager from kde to some twm
fossil. Unknown cause - but Nick if you did that, it was a seriously bad
idea! The video driver was changed to some nvidia-downloaded one,
perhaps this changed the displaymanager too (reason no 5 why nvidia is a
PITA).

Because of the ms reinstall the linux bootloader went West and the linux
system unbootable. The fix is to reinstall a new bootloader: boot
install media -> install -> fix system, deselect everything but
bootloader configuration. A few things get force-selected again. Make
sure you tick "replace code in mbr". Finish/save + reboot.

The display manager problem needs fixing by editing variables in 2 files
in /ets/sysconfig/. Yast does this with system->sysconfig editor. A text
editor would do, but make sure to run SuSEconfig after any changes.

This should bring everything back to order. Now the modem... it seems
that the driver integrated in SusE 9.3 is too old for Deane's modem, and
a manual upgrade to a newer driver kills system integration. No doubt
with a bit more effort this could be fixed. Losing system integration
unfortunately isn't really an option for a beginner, but I probably
won't have time for compiling new rpms. Give me a call sometime Deane.
